Volvo XC90 Oil Change: T5, T6, T8 and the B-Series
Every second-generation XC90 from 2016 on uses a 2.0-liter four that Volvo services every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first, with a full synthetic 0W-20 meeting Volvo's VCC spec. Volvo's support tables list about 5.6 liters with the filter for the T5, T6 and T8 Drive-E engines and about 6.1 liters for the B5 mild hybrid.

The XC90 is the big Volvo, seven seats and all-wheel drive on most of them, and in our part of Nevada it is a ski-season fixture on the Mt. Rose Highway between south Reno and Incline Village. Since the 2016 redesign every XC90 has used a version of one 2.0-liter four-cylinder: turbocharged in the T5, turbocharged and supercharged in the T6, paired with an electric motor in the T8 plug-in hybrid, and from the early 2020s offered as the B5 and B6 mild hybrids. One engine family keeps the oil simple, but the volume and the extras vary by version.
At a glance
- Oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first (Volvo 2025 maintenance schedule)
- VCC RBS0-2AE 0W-20 on most XC90s of the last decade; full synthetic ACEA A5/B5 only
- T5, T6 and T8: about 5.6 L with filter; B5: about 6.1 L (Volvo support tables)
- Engine air cleaner every 40,000 miles, sooner in dusty areas
- T8 plug-in: same oil, same yearly service

XC90 engines and their oil
The B6 and later model years may list a newer Volvo approval; Volvo's current US support pages for its SUVs show 0W-20 to VCC C6SP. We read the spec for your engine code before filling, and most XC90s have no dipstick, so the final level is confirmed on the driver display.
| XC90 version | Engine | Oil | Approx. volume with filter | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T5, T6 (2016-on) | 2.0L turbo, turbo plus supercharger | 0W-20, VCC RBS0-2AE | 5.6 L | Volvo XC90 support table |
| T8 plug-in hybrid | 2.0L turbo plus supercharger, rear motor | 0W-20, VCC RBS0-2AE | 5.6 L | Volvo XC90 support table |
| B5 mild hybrid | 2.0L turbo, 48-volt assist (B420T2) | 0W-20, VCC RBS0-2AE | 6.1 L | Volvo XC90 support table |
Volvo's yearly rhythm on the XC90
Volvo Car USA's 2025 factory maintenance schedule, which covers the XC90 with mild-hybrid and plug-in engines, sets service at every 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. The engine oil and filter are replaced and the service reminder indicator is reset each time. At 20,000-mile steps the cabin filter is replaced and the automatic transmission is checked for leaks, and at 40,000 miles the engine air cleaner is replaced.
Volvo also notes that only full synthetic oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 should be used. For an XC90 that covers 6,000 miles a year, the one-year rule is what brings it in.
Seven seats, a ski box and the Mt. Rose grade
A loaded XC90 with a roof box climbing the Mt. Rose Highway is a heavy SUV doing sustained work at altitude. Our Longley Lane service center, closest to the bottom of that road, sits at about 4,426 feet (USGS elevation data), and the summit is far higher. The supercharged T6 and T8 make their power with boost, and long climbs put real heat into the oil.
Volvo's schedule acknowledges mountain driving in one specific place: it recommends brake fluid every 3 years, but every year for cars driven in mountainous areas. Coming down the same grade into Reno, an XC90 leans on its brakes, so we check that fluid at every visit and tell you what we see.
The T8 plug-in and the oil it barely uses
The T8 can drive its first miles on battery power, and an owner who charges at home in Damonte Ranch may run errands for days without starting the engine. Volvo keeps the T8 on the same 10,000-mile or yearly schedule, and the calendar side is what usually triggers its oil change. Short engine runs on cold mornings, about 122 a year at or below freezing at the Reno airport on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, are hard on oil that never warms fully.
We service the engine side of the T8 and leave the high-voltage battery and charging system to the dealer. The Nevada DMV exempts hybrids from smog testing for their first five model years.
