Wiper blades for Stead and the North Valleys drivers: Reno Northwest (Mae Anne Avenue), 25 minutes
Stead is about 25 minutes and 13 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center by US-395 and North McCarran, and we replace wiper blades there while you wait. Because it is a real drive, pair the blade check with an oil change; the Car Care Council recommends inspecting blades twice a year.
The North Valleys are open country. Stead sits around the old air base at the top of US-395, with sagebrush hills on every side and not much to stop the wind that carries dust across Lemmon Drive and Red Rock Road. The 89506 ZIP has about 47,000 people, 2.18 vehicles per household and a mean commute of 24.8 minutes (Census ACS 5-year 2024), most of it down US-395 into Reno. That commute is where the windshield gets tested.
Dust first, snow second
Before most Stead drivers ever need their wipers for snow, they use them to clear dust. Reno averages only 7.35 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020, Reno-Tahoe airport), so for most of the year the glass is dry and gritty. Hitting the wiper stalk on a dusty windshield grinds that grit into the rubber edge and can leave fine arcs on the glass. Spray first, every time, and keep the washer reservoir full; it is the cheapest way to make a set of blades last.
US-395 in a storm
The airport station records about 20.9 inches of snow a year, and the North Valleys sit higher than the airport, closer to the storm track. A snowy morning on US-395 south means slush spray from every truck ahead, and in the afternoon the westering sun lights up any film the blades leave behind. Both are reasons to replace blades as soon as they streak, not after.
Choosing blades for open country
Beam blades sit lower against the glass and have no exposed frame for wind to lift or ice to fill, which suits a highway commute in a valley known for weather coming straight across. Conventional framed blades are fine for many vehicles; on a truck that sees real snow, the boot-covered winter version is the upgrade. Rear blades on SUVs and vans are sized on their own. If the truck is a work vehicle, the work van wiper page covers what changes.
The drive and the bay
Take US-395 south to North McCarran Boulevard and head west to Mae Anne Avenue; OSRM routing puts 6100 Mae Anne Ave about 25 minutes and 13 miles from the middle of 89506. Longley Lane is about 24 minutes if you are going to south Reno anyway. Mae Anne is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4.
No appointment. The blades get checked along with the rest of the multi-point inspection on an oil change, or on their own if that is all you need. We show you the edge and the price first, you decide, and the washer fluid is topped off before you go.

Why do my wipers leave scratches?
Usually grit dragged across a dry windshield. Use washer fluid before the wipers, and replace a blade whose rubber has worn down to the frame.
Is it worth driving from Stead for blades?
Combine it with an oil change or a smog check so one trip covers several jobs.
Which service center is closer to Stead?
They are about even: Mae Anne Avenue about 25 minutes, Longley Lane about 24, by OSRM routing.
How often should I check my blades?
Twice a year, per the Car Care Council, and any time they streak or chatter.
