Battery check for University and North Reno drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 10 minutes
University and North Reno is about 10 minutes from our Mae Anne Avenue service center, where a battery check measures the resting voltage, the cold cranking amps and the terminals. Once a battery passes three years, the Car Care Council's advice is to test it every fall.
Here is a familiar story from 89512. A student parks the car in October, walks to class all month, and finds it dead the week before Thanksgiving when it is time to drive home. Households in the ZIP average 1.5 vehicles and the median age is 32.8 (Census ACS 5-year 2024); plenty of those cars are older, bought used, with a battery of unknown age.
Sitting is the problem
A parked car still draws a small current for its clock, alarm and computers. Over a few weeks that drains a battery, and the Reno winter, 122 nights a year at or below freezing at the airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), makes a low battery even weaker on a cold morning. Each time a lead-acid battery is run flat it loses some capacity it does not get back, so a car that gets jumped twice a winter is wearing out its battery quickly.
If you know the car will sit, start it and drive it for a real distance once a week, or use a battery maintainer. If it already needed a jump, have it tested.
Three things we read, one thing we look at
Resting voltage: is it charged?
Cold cranking amps against the label: can it still do the job on a frozen morning?
Charging voltage with the engine running: is the alternator putting it back?
The terminals and cables: corrosion, a loose clamp, a cracked or swollen case.
A battery of unknown age
Most batteries carry a date code on a sticker or stamped into the case. If yours is past three years, the Car Care Council's guidance is to test it, and with about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter at the Reno airport (NOAA), the high desert summer is exactly the kind of heat that shortens battery life. We read the code with you during the check when it is legible.
If it fails, and where to go
We say so, show you the reading, and write down the group size and cranking amp rating your car needs. The battery check is a test, not a replacement service, so the next stop is a parts store, the dealer or a mechanic. Testing is available at participating locations, during the maintenance check that comes with a full-service oil change.

My car died after sitting two weeks. Is the battery bad?
Not necessarily. A test tells you whether it only needs a charge or whether it has lost capacity.
Where is the date on my battery?
Usually on a sticker on top or a code stamped into the case. We can help read it during the check.
