Transmission fluid service for University and North Reno drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 10 minutes
The University and North Reno area is about 10 minutes and 4.8 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center (OSRM routing, 10/15/26), and Longley Lane is about 13. For a used car with an unknown past, a transmission fluid check is one of the most useful things to do first, and we do it while you wait.
89512 is young and on the move. The median age is 32.8, households average 1.5 vehicles, and fewer than half own two or more (Census ACS 5-year 2024). That means a lot of one-car households, many of them driving something bought used, with no idea when the transmission fluid was last changed. The fluid itself will tell you. A sample takes a couple of minutes and costs you nothing to look at.
Bought it used? Start with the fluid
Service records disappear when cars change hands. A transmission sample shows what the paperwork does not: red and clear fluid has been cared for, brown or burnt-smelling fluid has not. When the history is unknown and the miles are high, we usually recommend a drain-and-fill rather than a full exchange, because it refreshes part of the fluid without a sudden change on a unit that has lived on old fluid. Kelley Blue Book's advice is simple: automatics follow the maker's schedule, so we read the manual for your model before recommending anything.
Many of the compact cars around campus use a CVT, and CVTs are fussy. They need the exact CVT fluid named in the manual, and we confirm it before draining.
Ten minutes across McCarran
Go west on North McCarran from Virginia Street or Sutro, pass Rancho San Rafael, and turn onto Mae Anne Avenue; the service center is at 6100. From the Wells Avenue side, US-395 south to Longley Lane is about 13 minutes and does the same work, with Saturday hours to 3 instead of 4.
How city and road trips wear fluid
The mean commute in 89512 is 20.0 minutes (Census ACS 2024), mostly city streets, and Toyota names stop-and-go driving as a reason to shorten the transmission fluid interval. Then come the long drives: home for the holidays over Donner, or down US-395 in July, when the Reno airport station has already logged most of its roughly 65 days at 90 degrees or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Heat breaks fluid down, and a loaded car on a long grade makes plenty of it.

What a customer said
Reno Northwest
Excellent facility!First visit a day ago. Shop Manager Tim welcomed me, and naturally started a friendly conversation (about cars), then he proceeded to personally service my car (oil change),he worked fast, but not in a hurry, changed the oil, greased the joints, checked everything around the engine, also detected a low transmission fluid level, which he corrected. Saying it simply:Tim is of a kind of professional they don't make any more! I will be back!

My car shifts hard when cold. Is that the fluid?
Cold fluid is thick, so the first shifts can be firm. If it continues once warm, have us look; see hard shifting.
Is a drain-and-fill enough on an old car?
Often it is the safer choice when the history is unknown. We explain why before you decide.
