Oil change for University and North Reno drivers, 10 minutes away at Reno Northwest (Mae Anne Avenue)
From the university district and north Reno, our Mae Anne Avenue service center is about 10 minutes and 4.8 miles west on North McCarran (OSRM routing, 10/15/26). No appointment: drive in and we change the oil and filter, lube the chassis, reset the light and check the car while you wait.
In 89512 the household average is 1.5 vehicles, and fewer than half of households, 42.8 percent, own two or more (Census ACS 5-year 2024). When there is one car in the driveway, it has to start every morning. That is the whole case for keeping its oil on schedule, and it is why we built this page for the neighborhoods between the university, Wells Avenue and the Sun Valley line.
The one-car household and the oil in it
A single car that does everything, the commute, the grocery run, the airport pickup, racks up a lot of short cold trips. The mean commute here is 20.0 minutes (Census ACS 2024), but the errands in between are two and three miles. On a short trip the oil never gets hot enough to cook off the water vapor and fuel that collect in it, and that mix is what turns oil acidic and thin ahead of schedule. Reno's 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals) make the cold starts colder, and the 4,917-foot elevation at our service center (USGS 3DEP) means the engine runs a little richer the whole time.
None of this means an oil change every few weeks. It means following the manual's severe-service interval instead of the normal one. AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes and that the owner's manual sets the figure, shorter under severe conditions like short trips and stop-and-go. We look up the manual's number for your car and put it on the windshield sticker.
North McCarran, ten minutes, done
Head west on North McCarran from Virginia Street or Sutro, pass the Rancho San Rafael side, and turn onto Mae Anne Avenue. The service center is at 6100 Mae Anne Ave. OSRM free-flow routing makes it about 10 minutes and 4.8 miles from the center of 89512. If you are on the east side near Wells or the Sun Valley Boulevard end, our Longley Lane service center in south Reno is about 13 minutes down US-395 and is the same service with Saturday hours until 3.
What a full-service oil change gets you here
Up to 5 quarts of the oil your manufacturer specifies, in conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, high-mileage or diesel, plus a new oil filter and chassis lubrication where the maker lists grease points. We reset the oil-change light so the dash stops nagging. Then the check: engine air filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, radiator fluid, washer fluid, tire pressure, headlights, tail lights and wiper blades, with a look under the hood and underneath. A battery test and the cabin air filter are done on request.
For a one-car household the check matters as much as the oil. A battery that is weak in October is a car that will not start in January, and a bald wiper is a problem the first time the Truckee Meadows gets its share of the 21 inches of snow the airport averages (NOAA). We show you what we found, give you the price of any extra item before we touch it, and you decide.
No appointment, and the hours that fit a class schedule
The bay at Mae Anne Avenue takes cars in the order they arrive, Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday. Call (775) 787-1000 if you want to ask about the line before you head over. Bring the car between classes or on a Saturday morning; the service happens while you wait with the car.
The smog check, for Nevada-registered cars
North Reno is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, so a vehicle registered at an 89512 address gets an annual smog check at renewal once it is past its first three registrations, with hybrids exempt for their first five model years (Nevada DMV). Mae Anne Avenue tests, and a passing result is valid for 90 days, so the smog check and the oil change can be one trip. A car registered in another state follows that state's rules instead.

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How long does the oil last if I barely drive?
Oil ages by time as well as miles. Most manuals pair the mileage interval with a number of months; we follow the manual and note both on the sticker.
Is Longley Lane or Mae Anne closer to the university?
Mae Anne Avenue is about 10 minutes by North McCarran; Longley Lane is about 13 by US-395. Both do the same oil change and smog check.
Do I have to book ahead?
No. Drive in during open hours, Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4.
Will you check my battery before winter?
Yes, on request, at the same visit. Reno averages 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA), so fall is the time to ask.
