Coolant flush for University and North Reno drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 10 minutes

The University and North Reno area (89512) is about 10 minutes and 4.8 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center by OSRM routing, with Longley Lane about 13 minutes away. Drive in, and we will test your coolant, tell you whether it still protects, and if not, flush it and refill with the type your owner's manual specifies.

Bought a used car and have no idea what is in the radiator? That is a common story around the university, where the 89512 ZIP has a median age of 32.8 and averages 1.5 vehicles per household (Census ACS 5-year 2024). A car with an unknown service history is exactly the case AAA addresses: when you do not know which coolant is in the system, a complete flush before refilling with the factory type is the safe move.

Unknown coolant is the real risk

AAA says coolant color is not a reliable way to tell types apart and that OAT coolant is not compatible with the others. Mixing incompatible types can make the inhibitors drop out and form sludge that blocks the heater core and the narrow passages in the radiator. Previous owners top off with whatever jug is at the gas station, and nobody writes it down.

So on a used car we start by reading the freeze point and looking at the fluid. Cloudy, brown or gel-like coolant is a sign of mixing or neglect. If it looks clean and tests well, we say so. If it does not, the flush clears the system and the refill matches what the manufacturer specifies, which also gives you a known starting date for the next interval.

The published intervals

  • IAT, the older green coolant: about two years or 24,000 miles (AAA)
  • OAT, common on GM vehicles: about five years or 50,000 miles (AAA)
  • HOAT, common on Ford and Chrysler vehicles: about five years or 50,000 miles, some automakers up to ten years or 150,000 (AAA)
  • Your owner's manual overrides all of the above

Reno weather on a student's car

The Reno airport station averages 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and about 122 nights at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). A car that sits in a campus lot all week and then makes a Friday run up the Mount Rose Highway to Tahoe goes from cold-soaked to working hard in one trip. Healthy coolant handles both ends; diluted or mixed coolant handles neither well.

Getting to Mae Anne

Open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday, (775) 787-1000. No appointment. The written estimate comes before any work over fifty dollars, as Nevada's NRS 487.6875 requires, and you decide.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

I do not know when my coolant was last changed. What should I do?

Have it tested. If the reading or the look of the fluid is poor, a full flush to the factory type resets the clock.

Is Longley Lane closer for me?

From most of 89512, Mae Anne is about 10 minutes and Longley about 13. Either service center does coolant service.

Can I bring my own coolant?

Ask at the service center. We fill with the type your manufacturer specifies, and the technician will check what you brought against the manual.

Do you fix leaks?

No. If we find one, we tell you where it seems to be and recommend a repair shop.
