Hybrids and diesels, answered
Hybrids still need oil changes on the maker's schedule, often with a very thin grade like 0W-16 or 0W-20, and in the Washoe testing area they are exempt from smog checks for their first five model years (Nevada DMV). Diesels need diesel-specification oil and more of it, and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR in Washoe test every year.

Hybrids and diesels sit at opposite ends of the bay: one runs its engine less than any car we see, the other works its engine harder. Both raise the same kind of question, which is whether the usual rules apply. Mostly they do, with a few specific differences in oil, intervals and Nevada's smog rules. Here is what owners ask us at our four service centers, with the source named wherever a rule comes from outside.
Does a hybrid need oil changes as often as a regular car?
It needs them on the schedule in its manual, which is often similar to the gas version of the same model. The engine runs less, but it also starts and stops many times a trip and often runs cool in short city driving. Follow the manual's miles and months, whichever comes first.
What oil does a hybrid take?
Whatever the manual specifies, which on many current hybrids is a very low-viscosity synthetic such as 0W-16 or 0W-20. Using a thicker oil than specified can hurt fuel economy and is not what the engine was designed for. We look up the grade before we fill.
Is there anything special about servicing a hybrid?
The high-voltage system is off-limits; we do not touch the orange cables or the hybrid battery. Oil, filters, wipers, bulbs and most fluids are serviced like any car. Some hybrids have a separate inverter coolant loop with its own interval, which we note when we see it.
Does my hybrid need a smog check in Reno?
Not for its first five model years. The Nevada DMV exempts hybrids in the Washoe and Clark testing areas for five model years and tests them from the sixth. Our two Reno service centers test hybrids once they are due.
Do electric vehicles need anything from you?
Electric vehicles are exempt from smog checks (Nevada DMV) and have no engine oil. They still have wiper blades, cabin air filters, bulbs and tires, which we can check and replace.
What makes diesel oil different?
Diesel engines produce more soot, so diesel oils carry more detergent and dispersant and are rated to diesel categories such as API CK-4. Many late-model diesels with exhaust aftertreatment require low-ash oil. Use the specification in the manual; we match it.
Why does a diesel oil change cost more?
Mostly volume. Heavy-duty pickup diesels hold far more oil than a car, and the filter is larger. Our diesel oil change cost page lists published figures for the common trucks.
Does my diesel need a smog check?
In the Washoe testing area, diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR test every year at renewal after their first three registrations; heavier diesels are exempt (Nevada DMV). The 2026 Washoe cap for a diesel test is $67 plus the $7 certificate, according to the DMV's emissions page.
Do you top off diesel exhaust fluid?
Ask at the counter. DEF is a separate fluid in its own tank with a blue cap, never mixed with fuel, and the gauge or message center tells you when it is low.
Do you replace diesel fuel filters?
Fuel filters are a separate service with their own interval in the manual. If yours is due, we tell you and you decide.
Are diesels on the severe-service schedule?
Many are, by their own manuals, if they tow, idle for long periods or run dusty roads. Northern Nevada work trucks often do all three.
