Reno Northwest, 6100 Mae Anne Avenue

Cold Springs has the longest commute of any community on this side of Reno: a mean of 31.2 minutes, with 73.6 percent of workers driving alone (Census ACS 5-year 2024). The upside is that the drive into our bay is not an extra errand for most people; it is a slight detour at the end of a trip they make every weekday. Here is what those highway miles and the Cold Springs weather do to an engine, and how the stop at 6100 Mae Anne Ave goes.

Highway miles are the easy part

Thirty minutes of US-395 at speed is close to ideal for engine oil. The engine reaches full temperature and stays there, moisture evaporates out of the crankcase, and the oil does the job it was designed for. If every Cold Springs mile were a highway mile, a car here could sit at the long end of its manual's interval.

The problem is what happens before and after the highway. Cold Springs is named honestly: it sits higher and colder than the Reno airport, which already averages 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Winter cold starts push thick oil through tight clearances, and the first minute of a frozen morning does more wear than a long stretch of freeway. Many Cold Springs households also run the gravel and dirt roads around the valley, and dust is the other enemy: it loads the engine air filter and, if the filter is neglected, gets into the oil. Households here own 2.46 vehicles on average and 80.8 percent have two or more (Census ACS 2024), so there is usually a truck doing exactly that kind of work.

What interval, and who says so

AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, that the owner's manual sets the figure, and that severe service shortens it. Dusty roads, extreme cold and towing are on the severe list. So the commuter car gets the manual's normal number, the ranch truck gets the severe one, and we write each sticker to match. If you are not sure which schedule your manual calls for, bring the book and we will read it with you.

The route and the minute count

US-395 south to North McCarran, west on McCarran, then onto Mae Anne Avenue. OSRM free-flow routing says about 35 minutes from the center of the Cold Springs CDP; people who make the drive daily call it closer to 25 outside rush hour, and we quote the routing number because it is the one we can source. Our Longley Lane service center in south Reno is about 34 minutes, so if your work is on that side of town it is the same choice.

The full-service oil change

  • Up to 5 quarts of the grade on your oil cap: conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, high-mileage or diesel
  • New oil filter; chassis grease points lubricated per the manufacturer
  • Engine air filter inspected and shown to you, which matters on dirt roads
  • Transmission, brake, power steering, radiator and washer fluids checked; differential and transfer case on request
  • Tire pressure, headlights, tail lights and wiper blades checked; battery test on request
  • Oil-change light reset, and every finding explained before you decide on anything more

Hours and the smog check

Mae Anne Avenue is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday, at (775) 787-1000, with no appointment and the car staying in the bay while we work. Cold Springs is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, so a vehicle registered there needs an annual smog check from its fourth registration on, and a passing result is valid for 90 days (Nevada DMV). We test here; the Cold Springs smog check page has the rules, and pairing it with the oil change is the whole point of making the drive once.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Super satisfied with the service. Only tried to up my service for things I truly needed (air filter had TONS of burning man dust left in it, and they asked if I would like to replace). They were fast and professional. Do NOT confuse them with the garage next door. Those guys really suck.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is there any reason to drive past closer service centers to reach you?

One stop for the oil change, the inspection and the Washoe smog check, with a service center that has been locally owned since 1983. If the trip is already on your way home, it costs you very little time.

Do you handle diesel trucks from the ranches?

Yes. Diesel oil changes are on the menu and we check differential and transfer case fluids on request.

How often should a dirt-road truck come in?

On the severe-service interval in its manual. Dust and towing both shorten the interval, per AAA and the manufacturers.

What are Saturday hours?

8 to 4 at Mae Anne Avenue, no appointment.
