Wiper blades for Cold Springs drivers: Reno Northwest (Mae Anne Avenue), 35 minutes

Cold Springs is about 35 minutes and 23 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center by free-flow OSRM routing down US-395, and we replace wiper blades there while you wait. Since most Cold Springs commuters already drive into Reno, stop on the way home; the Car Care Council recommends a blade inspection twice a year.

Reno Northwest, Mae Anne Avenue

The name is honest. Cold Springs sits at the far north end of the Reno area, up US-395 toward the California line, and its commute is one of the longest we see: a 31.2-minute mean trip to work, with 80.8 percent of households owning two or more vehicles (Census ACS 5-year 2024). Long highway miles in a high, open valley are exactly the conditions that wear out wiper blades and then expose them.

A long commute is a lot of wiping

A blade's life is counted in strokes as much as months. A driver who spends an hour a day on US-395 runs the wipers through every passing shower and every patch of road spray, and the edge wears down accordingly. When it does, it leaves a thin band uncleaned at the top of each sweep, usually right where you read the road ahead. The Car Care Council's guidance is to inspect blades twice a year and replace them when they streak, skip or chatter.

Weather numbers, and why they understate it here

The nearest long-record NOAA station is the Reno-Tahoe airport, which averages 20.9 inches of snow and about 122 nights at or below freezing a year (1991-2020 normals). Cold Springs is higher and further north, so the mornings run colder and frost is the normal start to a winter day. A blade frozen to the glass and then switched on tears its own edge; scrape and defrost first.

Summer on the high desert

The same station logs around 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. In a valley with little shade, that sun works on the rubber all day, every day, from June to September. Ultraviolet light breaks down the rubber's surface until it cracks, and the cracks catch grit. Reno's dry climate, about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year, means plenty of grit to catch.

Blades for the US-395 commute

A beam blade, one spring-steel spine wrapped in rubber, holds even pressure at highway speed and has no frame to fill with ice. That is our usual suggestion for a Cold Springs commuter. Conventional and boot-style winter blades are available where they are the right fit. Washer fluid deserves the same attention: a winter-rated fluid that will not freeze in the reservoir, and a spare jug in the vehicle.

The drive to Mae Anne

Take US-395 south to North McCarran Boulevard, then west to Mae Anne Avenue. OSRM free-flow routing says about 35 minutes and 23 miles; Longley Lane is about 34. Both are open Monday through Friday 8 to 5; Saturday closes at 4 at Mae Anne Avenue and at 3 at Longley Lane. No appointment. We show you the blade, quote the price, and you decide. The smog check and an oil change can happen in the same visit.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Excellent facility!First visit a day ago. Shop Manager Tim welcomed me, and naturally started a friendly conversation (about cars), then he proceeded to personally service my car (oil change),he worked fast, but not in a hurry, changed the oil, greased the joints, checked everything around the engine, also detected a low transmission fluid level, which he corrected. Saying it simply:Tim is of a kind of professional they don't make any more! I will be back!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is there a closer option than Mae Anne?

Our two Reno service centers are about the same distance from Cold Springs, roughly 34 to 35 minutes by OSRM routing.

Why do my blades tear on winter mornings?

Usually they were frozen to the glass when switched on. Scrape and defrost first.

Should a commuter carry spare washer fluid?

Yes. A long highway drive in slush can empty a reservoir.

Do I need an appointment?

No, just drive in.
