Transmission fluid service for Cold Springs drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 35 minutes

Cold Springs is about 35 minutes from our Mae Anne Avenue service center and 34 from Longley Lane by OSRM free-flow routing (10/15/26), so it makes sense to pair the transmission fluid service with a trip you are already making into Reno. A 31-minute average commute each way puts a lot of highway miles on a Cold Springs transmission, and the manual decides when they add up to a service.

We will be straight: Cold Springs is at the far north end of US-395, and our service centers are in Reno. The good news is that Cold Springs residents are already driving into town. The mean commute is 31.2 minutes (Census ACS 5-year 2024), one of the longest in the county, and households average 2.46 vehicles with 80.8 percent owning two or more. Long highway miles are actually kind to transmission fluid. It is the rest of the story, the climb home, the trailer and the cold, that brings the severe-service schedule into play.

Mileage piles up fast

Sixty-plus minutes of driving a day is roughly 15,000 to 20,000 miles a year for a lot of commuters, which means a 60,000-mile normal interval arrives in three or four years and a 30,000-mile severe interval in less than two. Kelley Blue Book points owners of automatics to the manufacturer's schedule, and that is where we start. Honda's Maintenance Minder will call for transmission fluid on its own, though Honda notes it does not account for heavy towing or dusty roads.

What makes a Cold Springs car severe service

  • The long, steady climb north on US-395 at the end of the day
  • Boats and campers headed for Pyramid Lake or over Donner
  • Dirt roads and lots on the edge of the valley
  • Winter mornings well below what the Reno airport sees: the airport alone averages 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals)
  • Toyota names towing and severe weather as reasons to change transmission fluid sooner

The route and the choice of service center

Head south on US-395, exit at North McCarran, go west and turn onto Mae Anne Avenue to number 6100. If your job is in south Reno, staying on US-395 to Longley Lane is a minute shorter. Many Cold Springs customers come Saturday morning and get the oil change and the transmission check in one visit.

What we do

The technician checks the level, pulls a sample and shows it to you. Red and clear fluid is healthy; brown and burnt-smelling fluid is worn. We put the recommendation in writing and you decide: a drain-and-fill replaces the fluid in the pan, a full exchange runs fresh fluid through the cooler lines, and the manufacturer's procedure decides which is allowed. CVTs get their own CVT fluid. If a sample shows metal, we tell you that a fluid service may not help and that a transmission shop should look.

Hours

Mae Anne Avenue is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday; (775) 787-1000. No appointment.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Excellent facility!First visit a day ago. Shop Manager Tim welcomed me, and naturally started a friendly conversation (about cars), then he proceeded to personally service my car (oil change),he worked fast, but not in a hurry, changed the oil, greased the joints, checked everything around the engine, also detected a low transmission fluid level, which he corrected. Saying it simply:Tim is of a kind of professional they don't make any more! I will be back!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is it worth driving from Cold Springs for a fluid service?

If you are coming into Reno anyway, yes. Combine it with an oil change and it is one stop.

Highway miles are easy on fluid, right?

Steady highway miles are. The climb home, towing and cold starts are the hard ones.

Do you service CVTs?

Yes, with the exact CVT fluid the manufacturer specifies.
