Oil change near Cold Springs: the Mae Anne Avenue service center is 35 minutes away

Cold Springs is about 35 minutes and 23 miles from our Reno Northwest service center at 6100 Mae Anne Ave by OSRM free-flow routing down US-395; residents who make the drive daily tend to call it closer to 25. The service center does the Washoe smog check and the oil change in one stop, weekdays 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, no appointment.

Reno Northwest, Mae Anne Avenue, the bay

Cold Springs is the farthest community on this site, and we are not going to dress that up. The valley sits past Bordertown at the top of US-395, and the Census Bureau's ACS 2020-2024 estimates put 11,321 people there in 3,618 households, with 2.46 vehicles per household and 80.8 percent owning two or more. The median age is 36.7 and the median household income is $93,732. Those households commute an average of 31.2 minutes each way, nearly all of it on US-395 into Reno, which is exactly why a service center on the Reno end of that road makes sense: you pass us on the way to work, the store and the airport, and the smog test that Washoe County requires is done in the same bay as the oil change.

The drive, and why nobody makes it just for oil

US-395 south from Cold Springs runs past Stead and Lemmon Valley, through the North Valleys and into Reno. Exit at McCarran Boulevard, go west, and turn left on Mae Anne Avenue. The Longley Lane service center is a near-identical 34 minutes by staying on US-395 to I-580 and exiting at Plumb Lane. OSRM's free-flow numbers are 35 and 34 minutes; regulars will tell you the Mae Anne trip is 25 on a clear morning, and the truth depends on the Parr Boulevard merge.

Nobody drives 23 miles for an oil change by itself. Cold Springs customers come when the DMV renewal notice arrives, when the Costco run is scheduled, or when the car is already headed to the airport. Build the stop into a trip you are already making and the distance stops mattering.

Smog checks for Cold Springs registrations

Cold Springs is inside the Washoe County emissions testing area. The Nevada DMV's list of exempt communities covers Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth, and Cold Springs is not on it. A gasoline vehicle registered here needs a yearly smog check beginning with its fourth registration; hybrids are exempt for five model years; a pass is valid 90 days (DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26).

The 90-day window is the Cold Springs driver's friend. Get the test done on any trip into town during the three months before the registration expires, and the result is already at the DMV when the online renewal opens about 35 days before the due date.

  • Both Reno service centers test; the Mae Anne service center is the one on the McCarran side of town
  • A check engine light fails the test, so mention it before we plug in
  • Diesel pickups up to 14,000 pounds GVWR are tested too

High desert, long commute, two and a half vehicles

A 31-minute commute on a 65-mph highway is good for oil in one way, because the engine runs warm and steady, and hard on it in another, because the miles add up fast. At 60 miles a day, a 5,000-mile severe-service interval comes around every four months. AAA says many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles and the owner's manual sets the number, and for a Cold Springs commuter the number arrives sooner than it feels like it should. Our full synthetic oil change is the right call for the daily driver here.

Cold Springs is colder than Reno. The airport normals already show 122 freezing nights and 25 nights at 20 F or below a year, and the valley adds more. Batteries, coolant freeze protection and wiper blades are the three winter items the multi-point check covers at every visit. In summer, the open valley floor and 7.35 inches of annual rain mean dust in the engine air filter and, in fire season, smoke in the cabin filter.

Hours and the rating

Mae Anne is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday. Google shows 4.6 stars across 209 reviews on 10/15/26. Longley Lane keeps the same weekday hours and closes at 3 on Saturday, with 4.8 stars across 339 reviews.

If you are making the trip anyway, make it count: smog test, oil change, filters checked, battery tested, and the email club reminder set so the next one lines up with the next trip into town.

Questions from Cold Springs

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is Cold Springs really 35 minutes from the service center?

That is OSRM's free-flow routing from the center of the valley. Many residents who drive US-395 daily put it at 25. Either way, pair the stop with a trip you are already making.

Does a Cold Springs vehicle need a smog check?

Yes. Cold Springs is inside the Washoe testing area per the Nevada DMV, which exempts only Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth. The test applies from the fourth registration.

Which Reno service center should I use?

They are a minute apart by routing. Mae Anne is on the McCarran side; Longley Lane is near the airport and the south Reno stores. Go where your errands are.

How often should a US-395 commuter change oil?

By the owner's manual, and the miles add up quickly at 60 a day. Full synthetic on the manual's interval is the usual choice; we reset the reminder to that number.
