Washoe Valley is about 16 minutes and 12 miles south on I-580 from our Carson City service center at 1861 E College Pkwy by OSRM routing, and about 23 minutes north to the Longley Lane service center in Reno. Washoe Valley is the open country between the Reno and Carson ends of I-580, with Washoe Lake in the middle, Bowers Mansion on the west side and New Washoe City and Eastlake Boulevard on the east. The 89704 ZIP holds 4,846 people in 1,844 households in the ACS 2020-2024 estimates, and they are the most vehicle-heavy households on this site: 2.87 vehicles each, 87.4 percent with two or more, a median age of 56.6 and a median household income of $118,017. The commute is 26 minutes and splits both ways, some to Carson, some to Reno. That split is the point of this page. The oil change goes to whichever service center is on your way; the smog check, which the Nevada DMV requires here, goes to Reno.

Two service centers, one freeway
South to Carson City: I-580 south to the College Parkway exit, west a short distance, and the service center is on the north side of College Parkway near Goni Road. OSRM puts the center of 89704 at 16 minutes from the Carson service center. North to Reno: I-580 north to the South McCarran exit, east to Longley Lane and north; about 23 minutes. Eastlake Boulevard and Old US-395 are the surface alternatives on the days the wind closes the freeway to high-profile vehicles.
The Carson service center is open Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, Longley Lane Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3. Both are closed Sunday.
Smog checks: Washoe Valley is in the testing area
The Nevada DMV names Washoe Valley directly in its description of the Washoe County emissions testing area, alongside Reno and Sparks. A gasoline vehicle registered at a 89704 address needs a yearly smog check beginning with its fourth registration; hybrids are exempt for their first five model years; a pass is valid 90 days (DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26). Smog checks are at our two Reno service centers, on Mae Anne Avenue and on Longley Lane.
The practical arrangement for a Washoe Valley household is this: the smog test goes to Longley Lane on a Reno trip inside the 90-day window, with the result sent to the DMV electronically, and the oil changes in between go to whichever service center is closer that day. Our Washoe versus Carson smog comparison lays the two rules side by side.
- New vehicles skip the test for their first three registrations
- Diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR are tested
- A check engine light fails the inspection; mention it before the test
Nearly three vehicles per household
At 2.87 vehicles per household, the Washoe Valley driveway holds a commuter, a truck and usually a horse trailer's tow vehicle or a tractor-hauling pickup. AAA's guidance that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles comes with the owner's manual setting the number, and the truck that tows is on the manual's severe schedule. Differential service and the transfer case fluid are the two items a tow vehicle needs that a commuter does not, and we check both on request at the oil change.
The valley is windy, dry and cold. Carson City's NOAA normals record 146 freezing nights and 42.8 nights at 20 F or below a year with 14 inches of snow; Washoe Valley is in between the Carson and Reno stations and gets more wind than either. Battery cranking, coolant freeze protection and wiper blades are the three winter items on the multi-point check, and the engine air filter is the summer one.
What a visit looks like at College Parkway
Pull into the bay, stay with the vehicle, and we start the full-service oil change with the multi-point check: oil, filter, chassis lube where specified, tire pressure, fluids, battery, wipers, bulbs. We explain what we found and you decide. Google rates the Carson service center 4.6 stars across 319 reviews and Longley Lane 4.8 across 339 as of 10/15/26.
The wind warning on I-580 is the valley's reminder that the weather turns fast. The vehicle that is ready for it is the one that came in before the storm, not after.
