Sun Valley is the largest unincorporated community in Washoe County and one of the youngest. The ACS 2020-2024 estimates put 22,228 people in 6,922 households with a median age of 35.8, and the households are heavily equipped: 2.41 vehicles each and 74.9 percent with two or more. The median household income is $77,446 per the Census Bureau. The commute averages 25.9 minutes with 72.7 percent driving alone, mostly down Sun Valley Boulevard to McCarran or across to Pyramid Highway. We are not on Sun Valley Boulevard. We are 20 minutes away on both sides of Reno, with the one combination a Sun Valley driver needs every year: the smog test and the oil change in one stop.

Which service center, and how to get there
To Mae Anne Avenue: Sun Valley Boulevard south to North McCarran Boulevard, west on McCarran past North Virginia Street and the university, left onto Mae Anne. To Longley Lane: Sun Valley Boulevard to McCarran, east to US-395, south on I-580 to the Plumb Lane exit, then Rock Boulevard south until it becomes Longley Lane; the service center is just past the Sierra Express Car Wash. OSRM puts the Mae Anne run at 21 minutes and Longley at 20, so the choice is about the rest of your day, not the clock.
Weekday afternoons on McCarran near the university are the slow spot for the Mae Anne route. The Longley route rides the freeway and is more predictable at 5 o'clock.
Sun Valley's yearly smog check
Sun Valley is in the Washoe County emissions testing area. A gasoline vehicle registered here needs a smog check every year once it is past its first three registrations, a hybrid once it is past its fifth model year, and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR are tested as well (Nevada DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26). A pass is valid for 90 days and is sent to the DMV electronically.
Spanish-speaking customers are welcome at both Reno service centers. The test and the paperwork are the same, and the results reach the DMV the same way; our Nevada smog check page covers the rules in plain language.
- Renew online as soon as the test is in; the DMV opens online renewal about 35 days before expiry
- Test early inside the 90-day window so a failed test leaves time for repairs
- A check engine light is an automatic fail, so tell us first
Two and a half vehicles per driveway
With 2.41 vehicles per household, the Sun Valley garage holds a commuter, a truck and often a teenager's first car. Each has its own interval, and AAA's note that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles ends with the owner's manual setting the number for each one. A new sedan on 0W-20 full synthetic is on a different schedule than a 2008 pickup on conventional, and the My Garage page keeps the three straight.
The hills east of Sun Valley Boulevard are dry and open, and the Reno airport's 7.35 inches of annual precipitation does nothing to settle the dust. Engine and cabin air filters come out heavy, and we show you both before anything is replaced. Summers bring 65 days at 90 F or above, which is when the A/C recharge calls start; winters bring 122 freezing nights, which is when the battery calls start.
What a visit looks like
Drive in, stay with the car, and we start the oil change while the multi-point check runs: oil, filter, chassis lube where the maker calls for it, tire pressure, fluids, battery, wipers, bulbs. We explain what we found and what can wait. The Mae Anne service center shows 4.6 stars across 209 Google reviews and Longley Lane 4.8 across 339 as of 10/15/26, and both are closed Sunday.
A teen driver's first car is a good reason to come in together; the teen driver checklist covers what to look at between visits.
