Cadillac Oil Changes: The Oil Life Monitor, dexos1 and the Calendar
Cadillac uses GM's oil life monitoring system: it estimates oil life from how the engine is run, shows Change Engine Oil Soon when the oil is worn, and GM's owner's manuals say to change it within about 600 miles of that message and at least once a year no matter what the percentage reads. The oil has to carry the dexos approval in the grade GM lists for the engine, which on current Cadillacs is dexos1 0W-20 for the 6.2-liter V8 and 2.0-liter turbo, dexos1 5W-30 for the 3.6-liter V6, and dexosR 0W-40 for the supercharged V-Series engines.

Cadillac drivers in Northern Nevada split into two groups. One drives an Escalade hard: ski racks in February, a boat behind it in July, a full third row on the way to Incline Village. The other drives an XT4 or XT5 a few miles at a time around Caughlin Ranch or South Meadows and wonders why the car still says 60 percent oil life after eleven months. GM's system handles both, as long as you know the two rules it runs on and pour the right oil. This page lays out those rules, the grades by engine from GM's own capacity chart, and what we look at under a Cadillac at our four service centers.
At a glance
- GM oil life monitor: change within about 600 miles of Change Engine Oil Soon (GM owner's manual)
- Oil and filter at least once a year, and the monitor reset each time
- Escalade 6.2L and the 2.0L turbo: dexos1 0W-20; XT5 and XT6 3.6L V6: dexos1 5W-30 (GM 2025 chart)
- Escalade-V and CT5-V Blackwing: dexosR 0W-40
- No appointment at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395

Two rules: the percentage and the birthday
GM's owner's manual language is short. The system calculates when the oil has worn out and shows Change Engine Oil Soon; change the oil as soon as possible within the next 600 miles. Then comes the line that matters most for lightly driven Cadillacs: under the best conditions the system might not call for an oil change for up to a year, but the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the system reset at that time.
So a Cadillac is due at whichever arrives first, the message or the anniversary of the last change. We put both on the reminder sticker. If you drive an Escalade 20,000 miles a year you will hear from the monitor long before the calendar; an XT4 that does school runs will hit the twelve months first.
Grades by engine, straight from GM's chart
The figures are from GM TechLink's 2025 engine oil capacity chart for U.S. and Canadian vehicles. The cap on the engine and the owner's manual still have the last word, and one exception is worth knowing: GM's recall 25V-274 moved some 2021 to 2024 Escalades with the 6.2-liter L87 to a 0W-40 oil and a new fill cap that says so. If your cap reads 0W-40, that is what goes in.
dexos1 is GM's own approval for gasoline engine oil, stricter than a viscosity number alone, and it matters most on the small turbo engines. We use a dexos-approved full synthetic in the grade on your cap and write the grade on the receipt.
| Engine (RPO) | Found in | Oil | Capacity with filter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.2L V8 (L87) | 2021-on Escalade and ESV | dexos1 0W-20 | 8.0 qt |
| 6.2L supercharged V8 (LT4) | Escalade-V | dexosR 0W-40 | 8.0 qt |
| 2.0L turbo four (LSY) | XT4, XT5, XT6, CT4, CT5 | dexos1 0W-20 | 5.3 qt |
| 3.6L V6 (LGX) | XT5, XT6 | dexos1 5W-30 | 6.0 qt |
What the high desert does to a Cadillac
Reno sees about 122 nights a year at or below freezing, Carson City about 146 and Minden about 188 (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). Each cold start followed by a short drive counts against the oil life percentage, which is why the same XT5 burns through its monitor faster in January than in June.
Summer works the other end. With roughly 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter in Reno, an Escalade pulling a trailer up the Mount Rose Highway with the A/C on is running its oil, its transmission fluid and its cooling system hard at the same time. Dust is the third factor: at about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year in Reno, air filters load up early, and GM's manuals tell you to service the cabin filter more often in high-dust areas.
The rest of the Cadillac check
- Cabin air filter: GM says inspect it every 22,500 miles or two years; we pull ours to show you, and the cabin air filter service swaps it in the bay
- Engine air filter: inspected at every visit; many newer Cadillacs track it with an air filter life display
- Coolant: DEX-COOL, designed to stay in for 5 years or 150,000 miles in GM's manual, and refilled with the same type on a coolant flush
- AWD transfer case and drive units on Escalade, XT4, XT5 and XT6: levels checked, fluid service through our differential service
- Battery test at participating locations, lights, wipers, tire pressure and an under-chassis look for leaks
Every Cadillac visit ends the same way: the oil life system reset, the sticker set to the earlier of the two rules, and a plain list of what we saw. You decide what else gets done, if anything.

What a customer said
I've been coming here for smog checks for like 10 years. It's always fast, the guys in the shop are awesome and let me hang out with them by my car. Aaron in particular is just a great guy. Top notch place for an easy smog check!

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How often does a Cadillac need an oil change?
When the oil life monitor shows Change Engine Oil Soon, within about 600 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first. GM's manuals say the yearly change applies even if the monitor still shows life left.
What oil does my Cadillac take?
A dexos-approved oil in the grade on the cap. GM's 2025 chart lists dexos1 0W-20 for the Escalade 6.2L and the 2.0L turbo, dexos1 5W-30 for the 3.6L V6 and dexosR 0W-40 for the supercharged V engines.
My Escalade's oil cap says 0W-40. Is that right?
On some 2021 to 2024 Escalades with the 6.2L L87, yes. GM's recall 25V-274 changed those engines to a 0W-40 oil and fitted a new cap. We follow the cap.
Do you reset the Cadillac oil life system?
Yes, on every full-service oil change at all four service centers, and the sticker shows the next date and mileage.
Does my Cadillac need a smog check?
If it is registered in the Washoe County testing area and is past its first three registrations, yes, every year at renewal per the Nevada DMV. Both Reno service centers test. Cadillacs registered in Carson City or Douglas County do not need one.
