Cadillac XT4 Oil Change: One Turbo Engine, One Grade, Two Rules

Every XT4 sold in the U.S. uses the 2.0-liter turbocharged four, and GM's 2025 engine oil capacity chart lists it at dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 quarts with the filter. GM's oil life monitor decides when, and GM's manuals add that the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year even if the monitor has not asked.

A pickup truck on a slushy winter highway

The XT4 is the small Cadillac, built from 2019 through the 2025 model year, and GM's 2026 capacity chart no longer lists it. That makes it a car people keep: a second vehicle in a Spanish Springs garage, a daily driver for a short hop to work in Sparks, a winter car for someone who leaves the bigger SUV at home. That kind of use is exactly where an oil life monitor and a small turbo can catch an owner out. Here is what GM says, what the oil has to be, and what we check when an XT4 rolls into our bays.

At a glance

  • 2.0L turbo four (LSY): dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 qt with filter (GM TechLink 2025 chart)
  • GM: change within about 600 miles of Change Engine Oil Soon
  • At least once a year, with the oil life system reset
  • Model years 2019 to 2025; the 2026 GM chart has no XT4 row

The XT4's oil, by the numbers

GM TechLink's 2025 engine oil capacity chart lists the XT4's 2.0-liter LSY turbo four at 5.0 liters, 5.3 quarts, with the filter, dexos1 0W-20 oil and an ACDelco PF66 filter. It is the same engine GM lists in the XT5 and XT6 base models and in the CT4 and CT5 sedans, with the same oil and the same capacity.

The dexos1 approval is not marketing. Small direct-injected turbo engines can suffer low-speed pre-ignition, a knock under heavy load at low revs, and GM's spec includes testing for it. A 0W-20 that lacks the approval may pour the same but is not what GM calls for. We use a dexos-approved full synthetic 0W-20 and show the grade on your receipt.

Short trips: the XT4's real workload

January at the Reno airport averages about 26 nights at or below freezing and December about 27 (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). A turbo four that starts on a frozen morning, drives two miles to a coffee stop and shuts off is collecting condensation and unburned fuel in its oil. GM's oil life monitor sees those cold starts and short runs and lowers the percentage faster. That is why some XT4 owners see a change request in winter at mileages that surprise them.

The opposite case is common too. An XT4 that only does weekend errands may show plenty of oil life a year after its last change. GM's manual is clear that the system might not ask for a change for up to a year but the oil and filter must still be changed at least once a year. We set the sticker to whichever comes first.

Turbo heat and summer in the valley

The turbocharger spins on an oil film and is cooled by that oil, so its health follows the oil's. Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter, including about six at 100 F or more (NOAA normals). A long climb toward Virginia City or up the Mount Rose Highway in July, at our altitude, asks the turbo for a lot of boost. Clean oil at the correct level is the cheapest protection there is.

Between changes, check the level. If it is dropping faster than you expect, tell us at the next visit and we will note it on the sheet. A turbo engine that uses oil between changes is something a dealer or repair shop should look at, and we will say so plainly.

What the XT4 visit covers

  • Drain, new filter and 5.3 quarts of dexos1 0W-20 full synthetic, leveled on the dipstick
  • Oil life system reset, sticker set to the monitor or twelve months
  • Cabin and engine air filters pulled and shown; GM says inspect the cabin filter every 22,500 miles or two years and more often in dust
  • AWD rear drive unit checked for leaks on all-wheel-drive models
  • Battery test at participating locations, a must on a car with stop-start and short trips, plus coolant, lights, wipers and tire pressure

The closest bay for Sparks and Spanish Springs is 4993 Longley Ln, and Northwest Reno uses 6100 Mae Anne Ave. Both test for smog, and neither needs an appointment.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Cadillac XT4 take?

dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 quarts with the filter, per GM TechLink's 2025 engine oil capacity chart.

Why did my XT4 ask for an oil change so soon?

GM's oil life monitor shortens the interval for cold starts and short trips, which describe a lot of winter driving here. It is counting the conditions your oil actually saw.

Is once a year enough if I barely drive?

Once a year is GM's minimum. If the monitor asks sooner, change it sooner; if it does not, change it at twelve months anyway.

Does my XT4 need a smog check in Reno?

If it is registered in the Washoe County testing area and past its first three registrations, yes, each year at renewal per the Nevada DMV. Both Reno service centers test.
