Cadillac XT5 Oil Change: V6 on 5W-30, Turbo Four on 0W-20

The XT5 is one of the few current GM models that uses two different oil grades depending on the engine: GM's 2025 and 2026 capacity charts list the 3.6-liter V6 at dexos1 5W-30, 6.0 quarts with the filter, and the 2.0-liter turbo four at dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 quarts. The oil life monitor sets the timing, with GM's rule that the oil and filter are changed at least once a year.

Look under the hood before you buy oil for an XT5. The engine cover tells you which one you have, and the two take different oil. We see plenty of both on College Parkway: the V6 trucks that commute down I-580 from Washoe Valley and the turbo fours that live in Carson City neighborhoods and do most of their driving within a few miles of home. This page goes through the grades, how GM's monitor treats each kind of driving, and the rest of the XT5 checklist.

At a glance

  • 3.6L V6 (LGX): dexos1 5W-30, 6.0 qt with filter (GM 2025 and 2026 charts)
  • 2.0L turbo (LSY): dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 qt with filter
  • Change within about 600 miles of Change Engine Oil Soon, and at least once a year
  • Cabin filter inspection every 22,500 miles or two years in GM's manuals, sooner in dust

Read the engine cover first

Both rows come from GM TechLink's 2025 and 2026 engine oil capacity charts for U.S. and Canadian vehicles, and they match what GM prints on the fill caps. The V6 has been in the XT5 since the model began; the 2.0-liter turbo arrived later as the base engine. Pouring 0W-20 in the V6 or 5W-30 in the turbo is the most common mistake we catch at the counter, so we confirm the engine and read the cap every time.

Both engines want a dexos1-approved oil. That approval is GM's own standard for deposit control and protection against low-speed pre-ignition in direct-injected turbo engines, which is why a bottle that only says 0W-20 is not enough for the LSY.

Carson City commutes and what the monitor counts

Carson City logs about 146 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). An XT5 that starts cold and drives three miles to the office never fully warms its oil, and GM's oil life system counts those starts against the percentage. A V6 that runs the I-580 grade into Reno every morning sees steadier temperatures and a slower countdown, even with more miles.

Either way, GM's manual has a backstop for low-mileage owners: the monitor might not ask for a change for up to a year under the best conditions, but the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the system reset. If your XT5 says 45 percent and it has been twelve months, it is due.

Washoe Valley wind, dust and the two filters

The stretch between Carson and Reno is known for crosswinds that carry dust off the valley floor, and Carson City gets only about 9.3 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA normals). GM's manuals tell you to inspect the passenger compartment filter every 22,500 miles or two years and to replace it more often in areas with high dust or poor air quality. Wildfire smoke season counts as poor air quality.

We pull the cabin filter and the engine air filter at every visit and show them to you with the dirt still on. Replacing either is up to you; our engine air filter service and cabin filter swap happen in the same bay.

Our XT5 bay checklist

  • Confirm the engine, read the cap, drain, new filter and refill with dexos1 full synthetic to GM's capacity
  • Reset the oil life system and set the sticker to the earlier of the monitor or twelve months
  • AWD models: rear drive module and power transfer unit levels checked for leaks
  • Nine-speed automatic checked for seepage; fluid service on request through our transmission fluid service
  • DEX-COOL coolant level, battery test at participating locations, belts, lights, wipers and tire pressure

Carson City

A bit pricier than other options but there’s coupons online. I found the service here to be efficient and knowledgeable. Would definitely return.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Cadillac XT5 use?

The 3.6L V6 uses dexos1 5W-30 and the 2.0L turbo uses dexos1 0W-20, according to GM's 2025 and 2026 capacity charts. The cap on your engine confirms which.

How many quarts does an XT5 take?

About 6.0 quarts with the filter for the V6 and 5.3 quarts for the 2.0L turbo.

How often should I change the oil in my XT5?

When the oil life monitor shows Change Engine Oil Soon, within about 600 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first.

Does an XT5 registered in Carson City need a smog check?

No. Carson City registrations are not tested. An XT5 registered in the Washoe County testing area is, once it is past its first three registrations, per the Nevada DMV.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Drive into College Parkway in Carson City or either Reno service center and we work while you wait.
