Cadillac Escalade Oil Change: 8 Quarts, dexos1 and the Recall Cap
The 2021 and newer Escalade and Escalade ESV with the 6.2-liter V8 take 8.0 quarts of dexos1 0W-20 with the filter, and the supercharged Escalade-V takes 8.0 quarts of dexosR 0W-40, according to GM's 2025 and 2026 engine oil capacity charts. The interval comes from the oil life monitor, changed within about 600 miles of the message and never more than a year apart.

An Escalade is a big engine wrapped in a big job. Around here that job is usually a full cabin headed for a ski weekend at Diamond Peak, a wake boat behind it on the way to Sand Harbor, or a winter commute down I-580 from Pleasant Valley in the dark. GM lets the oil life monitor decide when the oil is spent, and an Escalade that tows and climbs will see that message well before one that cruises. What follows is the oil each engine takes, one recall that changed the grade on some trucks, and the fluids we look at while yours is in the bay.
At a glance
- 6.2L V8 (L87), 2021 on: dexos1 0W-20, 8.0 qt with filter (GM 2025 and 2026 charts)
- Escalade-V 6.2L supercharged (LT4): dexosR 0W-40, 8.0 qt
- Some 2021-2024 L87 trucks now take 0W-40 after GM recall 25V-274; the new cap says so
- Interval: the oil life monitor, within about 600 miles of the message, at least once a year

Which Escalade engine is under your hood
The fifth-generation truck that arrived for 2021 is the one we see most. GM's 2026 chart no longer lists a diesel Escalade, so the 3.0L Duramax trucks on the road are earlier models; they take dexosD, GM's diesel approval, not the gasoline dexos1. For the 2015 to 2020 truck we read the cap and the manual rather than guess.
| Years and engine | Oil | Capacity with filter | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-on 6.2L V8 (L87) | dexos1 0W-20, or 0W-40 if the recall cap is fitted | 8.0 qt | GM TechLink 2025 and 2026 charts; NHTSA 25V-274 |
| Escalade-V 6.2L supercharged (LT4) | dexosR 0W-40 | 8.0 qt | GM TechLink 2025 and 2026 charts |
| 2021-era 3.0L Duramax diesel | dexosD 0W-20 | 7.0 qt (as listed for the same engine in the Yukon) | GM TechLink 2026 chart |
| 2015-2020 6.2L V8 | the grade on the cap | per the owner's manual | owner's manual |
The 0W-40 cap on some 2021 to 2024 trucks
GM recall 25V-274 covers 2021 to 2024 Escalade and Escalade ESV models with the 6.2-liter L87, along with the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and full-size pickups that share the engine. According to the recall documents filed with NHTSA, engines that pass the dealer inspection get a higher viscosity 0W-40 oil, a new oil fill cap identifying the new grade, a new filter and an insert for the owner's manual.
That means two Escalades of the same year can need two different oils. We look at the cap before anything drains. If it reads 0W-40 we pour 0W-40, and if you are not sure whether the recall applies to your VIN, NHTSA's recall lookup or a Cadillac dealer can tell you.
Towing, climbing and the oil life number
GM's system reads engine load, temperature and revolutions, so a tow up the Mount Rose Highway or over Spooner Summit shortens the countdown in a way a flat run to Fernley does not. That is the system working, not a fault. GM's manual adds the calendar backstop: under ideal driving the monitor may not ask for a year, but the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year.
Cold is the other half. Reno averages about 122 nights at or below freezing and Minden about 188 (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), and an eight-quart V8 that never warms up on a short trip collects moisture and fuel in the oil. If your Escalade does mostly short winter hops, expect the percentage to fall faster from November to March. Our towing and oil changes guide covers the summer side.
Filters, fluids and the Escalade checklist
- Oil to the grade on the cap, a new filter and the oil life system reset
- Cabin air filter pulled and shown; GM's manuals say inspect it every 22,500 miles or two years, sooner in dusty air or wildfire smoke
- Engine air filter inspected; the high desert loads it early
- Transfer case and front and rear axle levels on 4WD trucks, with a differential service at the same stop if you tow
- DEX-COOL level and condition, the 10-speed automatic checked for leaks, battery test at participating locations, lights, wipers and tire pressure

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How much oil does an Escalade take?
The 2021 and newer 6.2-liter V8 takes 8.0 quarts with the filter, and so does the supercharged Escalade-V, per GM's 2025 and 2026 capacity charts.
Is my Escalade 0W-20 or 0W-40?
The 6.2L L87 is 0W-20 from the factory, but trucks that went through GM recall 25V-274 now carry a 0W-40 cap. The Escalade-V is 0W-40 from the start. We go by the cap.
How often should an Escalade that tows get an oil change?
When the oil life monitor asks for it, which towing makes happen sooner, and at least once a year. GM's manual says to change it within about 600 miles of the Change Engine Oil Soon message.
Can you service the diesel Escalade?
Yes. The 3.0L Duramax takes a dexosD 0W-20 oil, and we use a diesel oil in that approval and grade.
Will my Escalade need a smog check?
In the Washoe County testing area, once it is past its first three registrations, yes, every year. Gas and diesel trucks up to 14,000 lb GVWR are tested there per the Nevada DMV. Carson City and Douglas County registrations are not.
