GMC Savana Oil Changes: 4.3 V6, 6.6 V8 and the Older Engines

GM's 2026 capacity chart lists the Savana's 4.3L V6 at about 6 quarts and the 6.6L V8 at about 8 quarts, both dexos1 5W-30 with a PF63 filter. The Oil Life System sets the interval, and GMC says to change the oil and filter within about 600 miles of the message and at least once a year.

The Savana is GMC's full-size van, the same body as the Chevrolet Express with a different grille and badge. In Douglas County and Carson City you see them in white with a company name on the side: HVAC and plumbing crews, landscapers, cabinet installers and the shuttle that runs guests up to the casinos at Stateline. Because GM has changed the engines under the doghouse cover several times, the oil a Savana needs depends on its year and engine. We start every one by reading the engine code, not the badge.

  • 2019-2020 chart: 2.8L Duramax diesel (LWN) 6.0 qt of dexos2 5W-30
  • Oil Life System decides; at least once a year regardless (GMC)
  • Older 4.8L and 6.0L V8 Savanas: 6.0 qt of 5W-30

Which Savana engine is under the cover

Those rows come from GM's TechLink engine oil capacity charts for each period. Note the jump with the 6.6L gas V8: two more quarts than the engines it replaced. A fleet that runs both a 2019 6.0L and a 2024 6.6L needs a different fill on each, and we write the quart count on your record so the next visit matches.

The 2.8L Duramax diesel takes dexos2, the diesel-capable rating, not dexos1. We use our diesel oil change for those.

The Oil Life System on a van that works

GMC's engine oil support page explains that the Oil Life System estimates oil life from how the vehicle is driven, asks for service within about 600 miles of the change-oil message, and still wants an oil and filter change at least once a year. A work van rarely gets near the year limit. It reaches zero on the monitor because of how it is used: heavy payloads, short hops between job sites, and engines left idling to run the heater or keep tools charged.

Idling counts. A Savana that sits running in a Minden subdivision while the crew works can burn through its oil life with very few miles on the odometer, and January mornings in Carson Valley are hard starts: Minden averages about 188 nights at or below freezing a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. If the monitor shows a low percentage at a modest mileage, that is why, and it is working as designed.

Beyond the oil: what a loaded van wears out

  • Transmission fluid: a loaded van climbing Kingsbury Grade or Spooner Summit puts heat into the automatic. We check level and condition and offer a transmission fluid service when it is due on your schedule.
  • Rear axle: a solid rear axle carries the load; we check for leaks at the cover and seals.
  • Coolant: GM vans use DEX-COOL long-life coolant. We check the level and strength and look at the hoses.
  • Engine air filter: job-site dust and gravel lots load it fast.
  • Tires and battery: we set pressures for the load on the door placard and test the battery before winter.

How we service a Savana

  1. Drive in at US 395 in Gardnerville, College Parkway in Carson City, or either Reno shop. No appointment.
  2. We read the engine code and confirm the oil spec and quart count for that engine.
  3. Drain, new filter, refill with the GM-rated oil, and a dipstick check.
  4. Multi-point maintenance check on fluids, filters, belts, battery, lights, wipers and tires.
  5. We reset the Oil Life System and add the visit to your service record, which our fleet service customers can request by van.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a GMC Savana take?

Recent gas Savanas take dexos1 5W-30: about 6 quarts for the 4.3L V6 and about 8 quarts for the 6.6L V8 (GM 2026 capacity chart). The 2.8L diesel takes dexos2 5W-30.

How often should a Savana get an oil change?

When the Oil Life System asks, within about 600 miles of the message, and at least once a year per GMC. Idling and heavy loads bring it on sooner.

Will my Savana fit in your bays?

A standard Savana usually does. If yours carries a tall ladder rack or a roof-mounted unit, call the shop you plan to visit first.

Can you keep records for a van fleet?

Yes. We note the engine, oil and quart count for each van at each visit, and fleet accounts can ask for those records.

Does a Savana need a smog check?

Gas vans registered in the Washoe testing area are tested yearly after their first three registrations, and diesels up to 14,000 lb GVWR are tested there too (Nevada DMV). Vans registered in Carson City or Douglas County are not.
