Kia Carnival Oil Changes: The 3.5 V6 and Its Schedule

Kia's 2025 Carnival manual lists about 6.45 US quarts of full synthetic SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, for the Smartstream G3.5 GDi V6. The oil and filter are replaced every 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe use.

Kia calls the Carnival an MPV, but in the school pickup line at a Galena or Damonte Ranch elementary it is a minivan with sliding doors and room for eight. It replaced the Sedona for the 2022 model year, and the gas version has run one engine since: a 3.5-liter V6 with an eight-speed automatic. For 2025 Kia also added a hybrid version with a 1.6-liter turbo. A family van does a particular kind of driving, lots of short trips with the occasional long haul fully loaded, and that shapes which half of Kia's schedule fits.

At a glance

  • 3.5L V6: about 6.45 US qt, full synthetic 0W-20 (2025 Carnival Owner's Manual)
  • Normal 8,000 miles or 12 months; severe 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • Severe oil column applies to very cold weather, towing or roof loads, and commercial use
  • Coolant: first at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 or 24

The numbers behind a Carnival oil change

The recommended lubricants page of Kia's online 2025 Carnival manual lists the V6 at 6.45 US quarts on a drain and refill, full synthetic SAE 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. The automatic holds about 7.4 quarts of SP4M-1 fluid and the cooling system about 9.9 quarts of phosphate-based ethylene glycol coolant.

If you drive the 2025 Carnival Hybrid, the 1.6L turbo has its own row in its own section of the manual. We look it up for your van rather than assume the V6 numbers, and we fill to the dipstick, not to a habit.

Three letters that decide the interval

The scheduled maintenance page for the 2025 Carnival replaces oil and filter at every 8,000-mile or 12-month column on the normal schedule. The severe schedule shortens that to every 5,000 miles or 6 months, and for the oil it names three driving conditions: D, driving where salt or corrosive material is used or in very cold weather; H, towing, camping or carrying loads on the roof; and I, commercial use.

A Carnival with a roof box for the drive to Lake Tahoe is H. A Carnival that does an airport shuttle or a church van route is I. And one parked in a Minden driveway through the winter is a strong case for D: the Minden station averages about 188 nights at or below freezing a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and about 75 of them reach 20 F or colder. Families who do none of that and keep the van garaged can stay on 8,000 if they choose.

Transmission, coolant and the air inside the van

  • Automatic transmission fluid: on Kia's severe list under conditions A, C, E, F, G, H, I and K, which includes short trips, dust, heavy traffic and mountain roads.
  • Coolant: Kia's normal schedule sets the first replacement at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Engine air filter: replace more often under dusty or rough-road conditions C and E.
  • Cabin air filter: replace more often under conditions C, E and G. A van full of kids during wildfire smoke season notices a clogged one fast. Our smoke season guide explains why.
  • Spark plugs are on the severe list for short trips, idling, traffic, mountain driving and towing.

What happens when the Carnival pulls in

Drive in at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395 in Gardnerville, no appointment. We drain the V6, fit a new filter, refill with full synthetic 0W-20 and check the level twice. The multi-point maintenance check looks at the engine and cabin air filters, the transmission fluid, coolant, the battery, belts, lights, wipers and the pressure in all four tires, which matters on a heavy van.

Before we finish we reset the service reminder and walk you through anything on the sheet. If the transmission or coolant line on your schedule is close, we say so, and you make the call. Ask about our transmission fluid service if it is.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Kia Carnival use?

The 3.5L V6 takes full synthetic SAE 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, about 6.45 US quarts, per the 2025 Carnival manual.

How often does a Carnival need an oil change?

Every 8,000 miles or 12 months on Kia's normal schedule, every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe conditions such as very cold weather, roof loads or towing.

Do you service the Carnival Hybrid?

Yes. We check its own spec in the hybrid's manual and the cap before we drain it, since its 1.6L turbo is a different engine from the V6.

Will a Carnival fit in your bays?

It is a minivan and fits like one. If yours carries a tall roof rack or cargo box, mention it when you pull in.

Is a Carnival from Gardnerville smog tested?

No. Vehicles registered in Douglas County do not need a smog check for registration (Nevada DMV).
