Kia Sorento Oil Changes: Which 2.5 Do You Have?
Kia's 2024 Sorento manual lists full synthetic 0W-20 for the 2.5L GDi and full synthetic 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo, both about 6.13 quarts and rated API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6. The oil and filter are replaced every 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe use.

Since the 2021 redesign, gas Sorentos come with one of two 2.5L engines: a naturally aspirated GDi with an eight-speed automatic, or a turbocharged T-GDi with an eight-speed wet dual clutch. They hold the same amount of oil and take different oils. At our service centers the Sorento is a common three-row crossover for families in Sparks and Dayton, and getting that engine call right is the first step of every visit.

Grade, capacity and the rule about lower-grade oil
The recommended lubricants and capacities page in Kia's online 2024 Sorento manual lists the Smartstream G2.5 GDi at about 6.13 US quarts of full synthetic SAE 0W-20 and the G2.5 T-GDi at the same volume of full synthetic SAE 0W-30, each meeting API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6. Kia's maintenance precautions say that if the recommended oil is not used, the oil should be replaced on the severe usage schedule.
Kia's manual also describes an Oil Life Management System on equipped vehicles that predicts oil life from driving history and can show an alert before the normal interval. We reset it at every change.
When it is due
Normal schedule: replace oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe usage schedule: every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Kia's list of severe conditions includes repeated short trips, long idling, rough, dusty or unpaved roads, salted roads or very cold weather, heavy traffic, repeated uphill, downhill or mountain driving, and towing, camping or roof loads.
Dayton is a good example. Its households average about 2.3 vehicles and its mean commute is one of the longest in the area (ACS 2020-2024), much of it on US-50 toward Carson City or over the hill to Reno. Families who then load the Sorento for a weekend at Lake Tahoe add mountain driving. Most Sorentos we see qualify for the 5,000-mile sticker, and we will set the one you choose.
Transmission, plugs and coolant
- Spark plugs: every 96,000 miles on the 2.5 GDi and every 48,000 on the 2.5 turbo, per the normal schedule.
- Transmission: under severe use Kia lists replacement every 56,000 miles, for both the conventional automatic on the GDi and the dual clutch on the turbo. The turbo's DCT uses separate cooling and control oils.
- AWD Sorentos: rear differential and transfer case on a 72,000-mile replacement line under severe use, handled by our differential service.
- Coolant: first replaced at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
A Sorento visit
- Drive in at College Parkway in Carson City, US 395 in Gardnerville, or Mae Anne Avenue or Longley Lane in Reno.
- We check the engine badge and the oil cap, then pour 0W-20 or 0W-30 full synthetic to suit.
- New filter, multi-point maintenance check, and a look at the engine and cabin air filters with you.
- Oil-life reset, sticker set to your schedule, and our notes. You decide on anything more.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
What oil does a Kia Sorento take?
Per Kia's 2024 manual, full synthetic 0W-20 for the 2.5L GDi and full synthetic 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo, about 6.13 US quarts either way.
How often should a Sorento's oil be changed?
Every 8,000 miles or 12 months normally, or every 5,000 miles or 6 months under Kia's severe conditions.
Is the Sorento Hybrid the same?
No. It uses a 1.6L turbo hybrid system with its own manual, and we follow that.
Can you do the transmission fluid on a turbo Sorento?
Ask us at the window. The DCT uses two Kia-specified fluids, and we will tell you what the manual lists before any work. See our transmission fluid service.
