Kia Forte Oil Changes, and What Its Successor's Manual Tells Us

Forte sedans use a 2.0L four with Kia's IVT on most trims and a 1.6L turbo on the GT, and the same engine names carry into the K4 that replaced it. Kia's 2025 K4 manual lists full synthetic 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6, about 4.5 quarts in the 2.0L, changed every 8,000 miles or 12 months normally and every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe use.

The Forte was Kia's compact sedan through the 2024 model year, and there are a lot of them around Reno, Sparks and the university. For 2025 Kia replaced it with the K4, which keeps the Smartstream G2.0 and the IVT on its main trims. We use the current K4 manual as the reference for the numbers below, and on any Forte we read the oil cap and the manual for that car's year before we pour.

Oil for the 2.0L and the turbo

Kia's online 2025 K4 owner's manual lists the Smartstream G2.0 at about 4.5 US quarts and the Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi at about 5.07 US quarts, both full synthetic SAE 0W-20 with an API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6 rating. On a Forte we confirm the grade on the cap; the 2.0L Forte and the GT turbo have their own entries in their own manuals.

Kia says the oil replacement cycle assumes the recommended oil. If a lower grade is used, the severe schedule applies.

The interval, and when a small sedan is on the severe side

The K4's normal schedule replaces oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months; the severe schedule every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Kia's severe conditions include short trips under 5 miles in normal temperatures or under 10 miles in freezing ones, stop-and-go traffic, heavy traffic areas and dusty or unpaved roads.

Compact sedans often live exactly that life. A student car that hops between campus, Midtown and a part-time job in Sparks rarely warms up fully, and Reno averages 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). For a car like that we recommend the 5,000-mile sticker; for a Forte that cruises I-80 to Fernley every day, 8,000 may fit. You choose.

IVT fluid, plugs and coolant

  • IVT: Kia's belt-type continuously variable transmission. The K4 manual lists its fluid for replacement every 56,000 miles under severe use, with the Kia-specified IVT fluid only. Our CVT fluid guide explains why the fluid type matters.
  • Spark plugs: every 96,000 miles for the G2.0 and every 48,000 for the G1.6 turbo in the K4 schedule.
  • Coolant: first at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Cabin and engine air filters: Kia says more often in dust; we show both to you.

Bring the Forte in

Any of our four service centers, no appointment: Longley Lane and Mae Anne Avenue in Reno, College Parkway in Carson City, US 395 in Gardnerville. We fill with full synthetic 0W-20 to the right level, fit a new filter, run the multi-point maintenance check, reset the service reminder and tell you what we found. A Forte registered in Washoe County also needs a yearly smog check after its first three registrations (Nevada DMV), and the Reno service centers can do it the same visit.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Kia Forte take?

The 2.0L takes a full synthetic 0W-20; we confirm on the cap. The K4 that replaced it lists full synthetic 0W-20, API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6, about 4.5 US quarts.

How often should I change the oil in my Forte?

Kia's current schedule is every 8,000 miles or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles or 6 months for short trips, heavy traffic, freezing weather or dust.

Is the Forte's IVT fluid ever changed?

Kia's K4 manual lists it every 56,000 miles under severe use. Our transmission fluid service uses Kia's specified fluid.

Do you change oil on the Forte GT turbo?

Yes. It takes the grade on its cap, and turbo engines deserve the full synthetic the manual names.
