Kia Soul Oil Changes: A Small Sump That Deserves Attention

Kia's 2025 Soul manual lists about 4.23 quarts of full synthetic 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6 for the 2.0L engine. The oil and filter are replaced every 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles or 6 months under severe use.

The Soul is the boxy one, easy to spot in any parking lot and easy to park downtown. The current model, sold since 2020, runs a 2.0L four with Kia's IVT continuously variable transmission. Its engine holds a little over four quarts of oil, one of the smallest fills we pour, and a small sump means every quart matters: a Soul that runs a quart low has lost close to a quarter of its oil.

Why we check the level between changes

Kia's online 2025 Soul manual lists the Smartstream G2.0 at about 4.23 US quarts of full synthetic SAE 0W-20, rated API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6. Hyundai and Kia manuals both note that some oil consumption is normal and that the level should be checked regularly. On a small engine that matters more, because the same small loss is a bigger share of the total.

When a Soul comes into our bay, we look at the dipstick before we drain it. If the level was low, we say so, because it changes how often you should look at the stick before the next visit. Our how to check your oil guide walks through it.

Kia's two schedules

The 2025 Soul manual's normal schedule replaces oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Its severe usage table does it every 5,000 miles or 6 months, and the oil row lists Kia's full set of severe conditions, from short trips and long idling to dusty roads, very cold weather, heavy traffic, mountain driving, towing and high-speed or stop-and-go driving.

City Souls spend a lot of time in the last of those. A delivery or rideshare Soul working Midtown and the airport loop is commercial use, also on the list. A Soul that commutes from Sun Valley to downtown and sits outside through 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, Reno airport) qualifies on the cold-weather line. Most Souls we see go on the shorter schedule.

The rest of the Soul's schedule

  • IVT fluid: replaced every 56,000 miles under severe use, with Kia's specified fluid; see our transmission fluid service.
  • Spark plugs: every 96,000 miles on the normal schedule.
  • Coolant: first at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Engine air and cabin air filters: Kia says replace more often in dust; Reno's dry climate, about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA), makes that common.
  • Wipers and bulbs: the Soul's tall windshield shows a streaky blade quickly.

A Soul in our bay

  1. Drive in at any service center, no appointment: Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395.
  2. We check the level first, then drain and fit a new filter.
  3. Refill with full synthetic 0W-20 to the listed amount and confirm the level.
  4. Multi-point maintenance check, reminder reset, and a quick summary. You decide on anything else.
