Kia Seltos Oil Changes: Two Engines, One Grade

The 2025 Seltos Owner's Manual calls for full synthetic SAE 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 in both engines, about 4.23 quarts for the 2.0L and 5.07 quarts for the 1.6L turbo. Kia replaces the oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles or 6 months on the severe one.

The Seltos showed up for the 2021 model year as Kia's small crossover with available all-wheel drive, and it has become a common sight in Spanish Springs driveways and the Carson City commuter lots along I-580. Under the hood you will find one of two engines: a 2.0-liter four paired with Kia's IVT, a belt-and-pulley type continuously variable transmission, or a 1.6-liter turbo. Both take the same oil, but the turbo holds almost a quart more and Kia treats it differently on the severe schedule. Here is what the book says and how we handle it.

At a glance

  • 2.0 MPI: about 4.23 US qt of full synthetic 0W-20 (2025 Seltos Owner's Manual)
  • 1.6L turbo: about 5.07 US qt of the same oil
  • Normal: 8,000 miles or 12 months; severe: 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • Cabin filter: replace every 16,000 miles or 24 months on Kia's normal schedule

Oil spec for the 2.0L and the turbo

Those figures come from the recommended lubricants page of Kia's online 2025 Seltos manual. Earlier turbo Seltos models from 2021 to 2023 paired the 1.6L with a dual-clutch transmission, and their own manual lists the fluid for it. We read the cap and the book for your year before we pour.

AWD versions add a rear differential at about 0.53 quart and a transfer case at about 0.42 quart, both on 75W-85 GL-5 hypoid gear oil.

Which column a Seltos lands in

The 2025 manual keeps the oil and filter at 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule. On the severe side it drops to 5,000 miles or 6 months, and here is where the engines split. For the 2.0L, Kia lists every severe condition, A through K, from short trips and long idling to dusty roads, heavy traffic, mountain driving and stop-and-go. For the turbo it lists only three: D (salted roads or very cold weather), H (towing, camping or a roof load) and I (commercial use).

Around Reno that difference matters less than it sounds. Condition D says very cold weather, and the Reno airport logs about 122 nights at or below freezing a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. A Seltos parked outside in Golden Valley from November through March is in that column whether it is a 2.0 or a turbo. A Seltos with a cargo box on the roof for a Northstar weekend is in condition H as well.

IVT, coolant and the two filters

  • IVT fluid (2.0L) and AT fluid (turbo): no service required on the normal schedule; replace every 56,000 miles under severe conditions A, C, F, G, H, I, J and K.
  • Coolant: first replacement at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Engine air filter: inspect at 12 and 24 months and replace every 24,000 miles or 36 months, more often on dusty or unpaved roads (conditions C and E).
  • Cabin air filter: replace every 16,000 miles or 24 months, more often in dust, on rough roads or with repeated mountain driving.
  • Spark plugs: 96,000 miles on the 2.0L, 48,000 miles on the turbo.

The dusty-road line is the one we see most. A Seltos that uses the gravel roads off Pyramid Highway or the washboard into Washoe Lake State Park brings back a filter that looks it. We hold it up for you. See our CVT fluid guide if the IVT question comes up.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Kia Seltos take?

Full synthetic SAE 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, per the 2025 Seltos Owner's Manual, for both the 2.0L and the 1.6L turbo.

How much oil does a Seltos hold?

About 4.23 US quarts for the 2.0L and about 5.07 US quarts for the 1.6L turbo on a drain and refill.

Is my turbo Seltos on the severe schedule?

For the turbo, Kia's severe oil column applies under very cold weather or salted roads, towing or roof loads, and commercial use. Many Northern Nevada winters meet the first one.

Does the IVT in my Seltos need service?

Kia says no service is required on the normal schedule and lists replacement every 56,000 miles under severe use. We can check the fluid condition and talk through it with you.

Does a Seltos need a smog check in Reno?

In the Washoe testing area, yes, once it is past its first three registrations (Nevada DMV). Both Reno shops do smog checks.
