Kia Niro Oil Changes: Hybrid, Plug-In and the 0W-16 Spec

The 2025 Niro Owner's Manual lists about 4 US quarts of full synthetic SAE 0W-16, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, for the 1.6L engine in both the hybrid and the plug-in hybrid. Kia changes the oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles or 6 months on the severe one.

Most Niros we see on Kietzke Lane are the hybrid, with a fair number of plug-ins and the occasional Niro EV that needs no oil at all. The second generation arrived for 2023 with the same idea as the first: a 1.6-liter gas engine, an electric motor between it and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and fuel economy that makes the commute to Carson feel cheap. A hybrid engine shuts off and restarts constantly and can spend long stretches cold, so the oil it uses is unusually thin and the way it wears is a little different from a regular car.

At a glance

  • HEV and PHEV 1.6L: about 4 US qt of full synthetic 0W-16 (2025 Niro Owner's Manual)
  • Normal 8,000 miles or 12 months; severe 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • DCT fluid: no service on the normal schedule, 72,000 miles under severe use
  • Plug-in inverter coolant: every 32,000 miles or 36 months

Why the Niro takes 0W-16

Kia's online 2025 Niro manual lists the Smartstream G1.6 GDi in the hybrid and plug-in at 4 US quarts on a drain and refill, full synthetic SAE 0W-16 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. That is a lower viscosity than the 0W-20 in most of Kia's lineup. It flows fast on a cold start, which a hybrid does many times on a single drive, and it is what the engine was built around.

We carry 0W-16 for this reason and do not substitute a thicker grade. First-generation Niros from 2017 to 2022 list their own grade in their own manual, and we check the cap on those before we pour.

The hybrid schedule in Kia's words

The normal schedule replaces engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The severe schedule replaces them every 5,000 miles or 6 months under three driving conditions: D, driving in areas using salt or corrosive materials or in very cold weather; H, towing, camping or carrying a roof load; and I, commercial use such as patrol, taxi or towing service.

The 12-month limit is the one a plug-in owner tends to hit first. A Niro PHEV that runs most errands on battery can go a year with very few engine miles, and Kia still wants the oil changed on time. For Carson City drivers the cold-weather line is real too: the Carson City station averages about 146 nights at or below freezing a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals.

What else changes for a hybrid

  • Dual-clutch transmission fluid: no service required on the normal schedule; replace every 72,000 miles under severe conditions C, D, F, G, H, I and J.
  • Engine coolant: first change at 120,000 miles or 120 months, then every 24,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Inverter coolant: the hybrid follows the engine coolant schedule; the plug-in is replaced every 32,000 miles or 36 months.
  • Spark plugs: 96,000 miles on the normal schedule.
  • Engine air filter: inspect at 12 and 24 months, replace at 24,000 miles or 36 months. Cabin filter: replace every 16,000 miles or 24 months, sooner in dust or on mountain roads.

The hybrid battery and inverter cooling system are not something we open. We check the reservoir levels we can see, and if the inverter coolant is due on a plug-in, we tell you so you can plan it. Our hybrids page covers the rest.

A Niro in our lane

Come into Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395 without an appointment. A hybrid can look switched off while it is ready to move, so we confirm the vehicle is fully off before anyone works under the hood. We drain the oil, fit a new filter, refill with full synthetic 0W-16 to Kia's amount, and check the level again.

Then the multi-point maintenance check: both air filters, the coolant reservoirs, brake fluid, the 12-volt battery, lights, wipers and tire pressure. We reset the oil reminder and give you the sheet.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Kia Niro hybrid take?

Full synthetic SAE 0W-16 rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, about 4 US quarts, per the 2025 Niro Owner's Manual for the HEV and PHEV.

Can I use 0W-20 in my Niro?

Kia lists 0W-16 for the current Niro hybrid and plug-in. We follow the manual for your year.

My plug-in barely uses gas. Does it still need oil changes?

Yes. Kia's schedule runs on miles or months, whichever comes first, so a low-mileage plug-in still gets its change at 12 months.

Does the Niro EV need an oil change?

No. It has no engine oil. We can still check the cabin filter, wipers, lights, tires and the 12-volt battery.

Does a new hybrid need a smog check in Reno?

Nevada exempts hybrids for their first five model years (Nevada DMV). After that, a Niro registered in the Washoe testing area is tested yearly. Our hybrid smog guide has the details.
