Kia Rio Oil Changes: A Four-Quart Engine on a Tight Schedule
The 2021 Kia Rio Owner's Manual lists 4.0 US quarts of oil rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 for the Smartstream G1.6, with SAE 0W-20 recommended and full synthetic required. Kia's normal schedule changes it every 7,500 miles or 12 months, and the severe schedule every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

Kia sold the Rio in the US through the 2023 model year, as a sedan and a five-door hatch, and plenty of them are still doing first-car and commuter duty around the University of Nevada and out to Fernley on I-80. The last of them, from 2020 on, run the Smartstream 1.6-liter with Kia's IVT. It is a simple, light engine with a small oil fill, and its maintenance schedule is shorter than the newer Kias that run 8,000 miles. Here is what the book for these cars says.
At a glance
- Smartstream G1.6: 4.0 US qt, 0W-20 recommended, full synthetic required (2021 Rio Owner's Manual)
- Normal schedule: every 7,500 miles or 12 months
- Severe schedule: every 3,750 miles or 6 months, conditions A through L
- IVT fluid: no service on the normal schedule, 60,000 miles under severe use

Grade and fill for the 1.6
The recommended lubricants table in the 2021 Rio manual gives the Smartstream G1.6 a drain and refill of 4.0 US quarts, classified API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. The viscosity chart recommends SAE 0W-20 for better fuel economy, and a footnote requires an API SN PLUS or higher full synthetic. If a lower grade such as a mineral or semi-synthetic oil is used, Kia says the oil and filter must be changed on the severe schedule.
Four quarts is not much. A Rio that is down one quart at the dipstick has lost a quarter of its oil, so we read the stick before draining and tell you if it was low. Older Rios with the earlier 1.6 list their own figures, and we check the cap on those.
7,500 or 3,750: how Kia splits it
Kia lists twelve severe conditions for the oil, A to L, and the Rio's oil row includes every one of them: short trips, long idling, dusty or gravel roads, salt or very cold weather, heavy dust, heavy traffic, repeated mountain driving, towing or roof loads, commercial use, high speed or hard acceleration, stop-and-go, and non-recommended oil.
A student's Rio that only goes from a north valleys apartment to campus and back is a textbook case of condition A, trips under 10 miles in freezing temperatures. Reno sees about 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). A Rio doing food delivery is condition I. Most local Rios belong on 3,750, and we will put whichever number you choose on the sticker.
| Item | Normal | Severe |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | every 7,500 mi or 12 months | every 3,750 mi or 6 months |
| Intelligent variable transmission fluid | no check, no service required | every 60,000 mi |
| Air cleaner filter | replace every 30,000 mi | more frequently (C, E) |
| Climate control air filter | replace every 15,000 mi or 24 months | more frequently (C, E, G) |
| Spark plugs | every 97,500 mi | more frequently |
Coolant and the IVT
Kia's normal schedule replaces engine coolant first at 120,000 miles or 10 years, then every 30,000 miles or 24 months. The cooling system holds about 5.8 quarts. The IVT holds about 6.9 quarts of Kia's SP-CVT1 fluid, and the manual is firm that only the specified fluid should go in. On the severe schedule it is replaced every 60,000 miles. Our CVT fluid guide explains what changes inside a belt-type transmission as the fluid ages.

How much oil does a Rio hold?
4.0 US quarts on a drain and refill, per the 2021 manual.
How often should I change oil in my Rio?
Every 7,500 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule, every 3,750 miles or 6 months on the severe schedule, which covers short trips, cold weather, dust and stop-and-go.
My Rio is past 100,000 miles. Anything different?
Many owners move to a high-mileage oil once the engine starts to use some. We check the level and any leaks and talk it over with you.
