Lexus LX Oil Change: LX 570 V8 and LX 600 Twin-Turbo
Lexus Tech Tip L-TT-0142-13 lists the 2013 and 2014 LX 570 on 0W-20 at 7.9 quarts with a 10,000-mile interval, while the 2010 and 2011 trucks stayed on 5,000 miles. The 2022 and newer LX 600 twin-turbo V6 uses SAE 0W-20 at about 7.7 quarts, and any LX that tows or drives dirt roads goes back to a 5,000-mile change under Lexus's special operating conditions.

The LX is the Land Cruiser's Lexus twin, a full-frame four-wheel-drive SUV that people buy because they intend to use it. Around here that means a boat behind it on the way to Pyramid Lake, a trailer up US-395, or the dirt road to a cabin past Peavine. The LX 570 ran a 5.7-liter V8 through 2021; the LX 600 that replaced it for 2022 uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6. Both hold a lot of oil, and both have a schedule that changes the moment the hitch gets used.
At a glance
- LX 570 2013-2014: 0W-20, 7.9 qt with filter, 10,000 miles (Lexus Tech Tip L-TT-0142-13)
- LX 570 2010-2011: 5W-20 or 0W-20, 5,000 miles; capacity depends on dipstick color
- LX 600 2022 and newer, 3.4L twin-turbo V6: SAE 0W-20, about 7.7 qt with filter
- Towing, dirt roads, short trips under 32 F or idling: oil every 5,000 miles

LX 570 and LX 600 oil by year
Lexus wrote the 2010 note carefully: a blue dipstick means 7.4 quarts and a green one means 7.9. That kind of detail is why we pull the dipstick before we pour on an older LX. For the LX 600 we did not find a Lexus document with the fill, so the 7.7-quart figure is from a compiled owner's-manual reference and we confirm against the stick. We also did not find published oil figures for the 2025 LX 700h hybrid; on that truck we go by its manual and cap.

The towing and dirt-road rule
Lexus's tech tip is direct: if a vehicle is driven off-road or on dirt roads, tows a trailer, makes repeated short trips under 32 F or idles for long periods, the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000-mile intervals regardless of the oil specified. Lexus also keeps the 5,000-mile visit on 10,000-mile vehicles for tire rotation and a check of every fluid.
An LX that pulls a boat out Pyramid Way to the lake, or a horse trailer through Washoe Valley, is on the 5,000-mile schedule by Lexus's own definition. That is worth knowing in summer, when Reno sees about 65 days at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals) and a loaded climb puts real heat into the oil.
Differentials, transfer case and coolant
- Front and rear differentials and the full-time 4WD transfer case: levels and seepage checked at every visit, with a differential service when towing or water crossings call for it.
- Automatic transmission: we check for leaks and condition; towing is the main reason to ask about a fluid service.
- Lexus Super Long Life Coolant: level and protection checked; a V8 or twin-turbo V6 that tows needs a healthy cooling system.
- Engine and cabin air filters: shown to you, dust and all, after trail use.
An LX at our shop
- Pull in at any of the four shops; we will tell you up front if the roof rack or a lift makes the bay tight.
- We confirm the engine, drain the large sump fully, replace the filter and gasket, and refill to the dipstick with 0W-20.
- Differentials, transfer case, coolant, brake fluid, battery, belts, lights and tires are checked.
- We reset the maintenance reminder and note whether your towing puts the truck on the 5,000-mile schedule.

How often should a Lexus LX 570 get an oil change?
The tech tip lists the 2013 and 2014 LX 570 at 10,000 miles on 0W-20 under normal use, and every LX at 5,000 miles when it tows, drives dirt roads or idles a lot.
Does the LX 600 use 0W-20?
Yes. The LX 600's 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 is listed at SAE 0W-20, about 7.7 quarts with the filter. We confirm with the cap and the dipstick.
Can you check the differentials while I wait?
Yes. We check both differentials and the transfer case at every oil change, with no appointment needed.
Does an LX need a smog check in Reno?
An LX registered in the Washoe testing area tests at renewal after its first three registrations, and both Reno shops do it.
