Lexus TX Oil Change: TX 350, TX 500h and TX 550h+
A Lexus dealer's TX guide lists SAE 0W-20 full synthetic and about 5.6 quarts with the filter for the 2.4-liter turbo in the TX 350 and TX 500h, and 0W-20 synthetic for the TX 550h+ plug-in V6, with its quantity in the owner's manual. Lexus plans TX service at 10,000 miles or 12 months, and drops the oil change to 5,000 miles under its special operating conditions.

The TX arrived for 2024 as the three-row Lexus built for families who need the third row every day. It comes three ways: the TX 350 with a 2.4-liter turbo four, the TX 500h that adds a hybrid system to the same turbo engine, and the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid with a 3.5-liter V6. In Douglas County, where families average 2.25 vehicles per household (ACS 2020-2024), it tends to be the car that does the long drives.
At a glance
- TX 350 and TX 500h (2.4L turbo): SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, about 5.6 qt with filter (Temecula Valley Lexus TX guide)
- TX 550h+ (3.5L V6 plug-in): SAE 0W-20 synthetic; capacity differs, see the owner's manual
- Normal service: 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first
- Special operating conditions: oil every 5,000 miles (Lexus Tech Tip L-TT-0142-13)

Three TX powertrains
The two turbo models share an engine and an oil. The plug-in is the odd one: a different engine with a different fill, and the dealer guide says plainly to take the quantity from the owner's manual. We did not find a published number for it, so on a TX 550h+ we fill to the dipstick and recheck after the engine runs.
| Model | Engine | Oil grade | Capacity with filter |
|---|---|---|---|
| TX 350, 2024 and newer | 2.4L turbo four (T24A-FTS) | SAE 0W-20 full synthetic | about 5.6 qt |
| TX 500h F SPORT Performance | 2.4L turbo four, hybrid | SAE 0W-20 full synthetic | about 5.6 qt |
| TX 550h+ | 3.5L V6 plug-in hybrid (2GR-FXS) | SAE 0W-20 synthetic | see owner's manual |

When the plug-in barely runs its engine
A TX 550h+ can do a lot of local driving on battery, which means the gas engine may stay off for most of a week. The dealer guide says to change the oil at least once a year even at low mileage. The TX 500h has its own quirk: the engine shuts off and restarts during normal driving, and short trips can let moisture collect in the oil. Both are reasons the 12-month limit is not optional on a TX.
Kingsbury, Spooner and the family trip
Lexus's special operating conditions are dirt roads, towing, repeated short trips below 32 F and long idling, and its tech tip says the oil must be replaced at 5,000-mile intervals when they apply. A TX based near our Gardnerville shop, which sits at 4,785 feet (USGS), checks more than one of those boxes. Douglas County drivers average a 26.2-minute commute (ACS 2020-2024), and many weekends add the climb up Kingsbury Grade or Spooner Summit with a full third row and a roof box. Minden's 75 nights a year at 20 F or colder (NOAA 1991-2020 normals) take care of the short-trip-in-the-cold condition through winter.
None of that is a problem for the engine if the oil is fresh. It is just the honest reason many Carson Valley TX owners choose the shorter interval.
What we check on a TX
- 0W-20 to the right level for the engine, new filter and gasket, maintenance reminder reset
- Engine and cabin air filters, pulled and shown
- Coolant: the hybrid models run a separate inverter coolant loop in addition to the engine's; we check both reservoirs
- 12-volt battery test, belts, brake fluid, lights, wipers and tire pressure
- Underbody look for leaks and loose shields after gravel or trailhead roads

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How often does a Lexus TX need an oil change?
Every 10,000 miles or 12 months under normal driving, per the Lexus dealer guide, and every 5,000 miles under Lexus's special operating conditions.
Does the TX 550h+ need an oil change if I mostly drive electric?
Yes, at least once a year. Oil ages in the sump even when the engine rarely runs.
Is the TX 500h oil the same as the TX 350?
Yes. Both use the 2.4-liter turbo and take SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, about 5.6 quarts with the filter, per the dealer guide.
Will my TX need a smog check?
Nevada exempts hybrids for their first five model years and every vehicle for its first three registrations. A TX registered in Douglas County is not tested at all.
