Toyota Grand Highlander Oil Change: 2.4 Turbo, Hybrid and Hybrid MAX

The Grand Highlander's 2.4-liter turbo takes SAE 0W-20 with about 5.6 quarts including the filter, per Toyota's 2026 Grand Highlander Owner's Manual. Toyota's 2025 Grand Highlander maintenance guide changes the oil at the maintenance reminder, no later than 12 months or 10,000 miles, and every 5,000 miles or six months when the vehicle is mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads.

Toyota built the Grand Highlander for 2024 as the bigger sibling of the Highlander, with a real third row and three powertrains: a 2.4-liter turbo gas engine, a 2.5-liter hybrid, and the Hybrid MAX that pairs the 2.4 turbo with electric motors. Around Gardnerville and Minden it tends to be the family rig that does the school run all week and the ski run on Saturday. That mix, short cold trips plus a loaded climb, is the reason to know exactly what Toyota asks for.

At a glance

  • 2.4-liter turbo T24A-FTS: SAE 0W-20, ILSAC GF-6A, 5.6 qt with filter (2026 Grand Highlander Owner's Manual)
  • Oil at the maintenance reminder, no later than 12 months or 10,000 miles (2025 maintenance guide)
  • Dirt or dusty roads: 5,000 miles or six months
  • First engine and intercooler coolant replacement at 100,000 miles or 120 months

Oil by powertrain

For the gas turbo, the 2026 manual names 0W-20 as the best choice for fuel economy and cold starts and allows 5W-20 only until the next change. It lists 5.6 quarts with the filter and 5.3 without, Toyota Genuine ATF WS for the automatic, and Toyota Super Long Life Coolant for an engine cooling system of about 12.2 quarts plus a separate intercooler circuit.

The two hybrid versions carry their own manual. Toyota's other 2.5-liter hybrids in this family, such as the 2024 Highlander Hybrid, list 0W-16, but we do not assume. We read the filler cap and the hybrid's manual and pour exactly that.

Cold mornings in the Carson Valley

Minden averages about 188 nights a year at or below freezing and roughly 75 at 20 F or colder on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, more than Reno or Carson City. A 0W oil flows at those temperatures, which is why Toyota chose it, and it is also why the 12-month limit matters for a Grand Highlander that makes a lot of short trips to Gardnerville and back. Condensation from cold starts builds in the oil whether or not the miles add up.

A turbo engine also runs its bearings hot and then cools them fast. Fresh oil at the right grade is the cheapest protection the engine gets.

Dust, towing and the AWD hardware

The 2025 guide's dusty-road column moves the oil change to 5,000 miles or six months and adds inspections of the engine air filter. Its towing and dusty-road schedules also replace transfer case oil and rear differential oil on AWD models at set mileages. Families who pull a boat to Topaz Lake or park at a dirt trailhead off Kingsbury Grade are describing those columns.

On every visit we check the levels and show you the filters. A differential service can be done in the same stop.

What a visit includes

  • Oil and a new filter at the grade on the cap, reminder reset
  • Engine air filter and cabin filter pulled and shown
  • ATF, coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid checked
  • 12-volt battery test, belts, wipers, lights and tire pressure
  • Under-vehicle look at the transfer case, rear differential and boots on AWD models

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does the Grand Highlander 2.4 turbo take?

SAE 0W-20, about 5.6 quarts with the filter, per Toyota's 2026 Grand Highlander Owner's Manual.

Is the hybrid the same oil?

Not necessarily. The Hybrid and Hybrid MAX each follow their own manual, so we read the filler cap and match it.

How often does it need an oil change?

At the maintenance reminder, and no later than 12 months or 10,000 miles. Toyota's 2025 guide moves that to 5,000 miles or six months on mostly dirt or dusty roads.

When is the first coolant change?

Toyota's 2025 guide sets the first engine and intercooler coolant replacement at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months.

Does a Grand Highlander need a smog check?

If it is registered in the Washoe testing area and past its first three registrations, yes, at renewal, per the Nevada DMV, and hybrids are exempt for their first five model years. Douglas County and Carson City registrations are not tested.
